Best Beaches in Chalkida for Every Type of Traveler

Did you know? Chalkida is home to one of the most powerful tidal currents in Greece, with the waters changing direction every 6 hours!

Asteria Beach – The Urban Hub

Asteria Beach in Chalkida with calm waters, straw umbrellas, and sunbeds lined along the sandy shore.

Chalkida stretches across both sides of the Evripos Strait — a slice of it on the mainland of Beotia, but most of the town belongs to the island of Evia.

Right below the green hillside of Kanithos, you’ll find Asteria, a lively beach with comfy sunbeds, shaded spots, and plenty of cafés just a few steps away.

The beach bar runs from morning till late at night, serving coffee, drinks, and food so you can easily spend the whole day here.

Just one thing — don’t drift too far out when you swim. The “crazy waters” of Chalkida are famous for their strong currents. Stay within the buoys, and you’ll be fine.

Souvala

Souvala Beach was once the jewel of Chalkida, but now it is a bit neglected. However, as the beach sits close to the city center and has clear waters, it’s perfect for a quick dip.

Thankfully, the strong currents keep the waters always clear. It has a few umbrellas, showers, and a walkway for easy access.

The highlight is the iconic Red House of Chalkida, adding a unique charm to the view.

Beaches Near Chalkida Worth the Short Trip

Alykes Beach – Party & Play by the Sea

About 15 minutes south of Chalkida, Alykes, a 1km long sandy beach, is where the summer energy comes alive.

The water is crystal-clear and shallow—perfect if you’ve got kids in tow.

The beach has earned the Blue Flag every year since 2009, so you know it’s clean and safe. It is also a popular beach for water sports like jet skiing and paddleboarding

You’ll find beach bars, restaurants, sunbeds, and umbrellas for a comfy day by the sea. And if you’re here in summer, get ready—Alykes comes alive with parties and events that go from morning till night.

Local Tip: If you visit Alykes on a weekend in July or August, arrive before 10:30 AM. After that, the best sunbeds are usually gone, and the music gets much louder!

Lefkanti Beach

Lefkanti

Located near Vasiliko, Lefkanti is known for its important archaeological findings. Today, it is also a popular summer destination for the locals.

Here is what to expect:

  • Beautiful sunsets are perfect for couples
  • Clean water and soft sand
  • Seaside tavernas serving fresh seafood

It’s less commercialized than Alykes but still has enough facilities to keep you comfortable.

Viles Beach – For the Off-the-Beaten-Path Explorer

Viles Beach

If you’re into unspoiled nature and quiet spots, head to Viles Beach. From Lefkanti, follow the coastal trail past the archaeological site—it’s about a 15-minute walk.

Just when you start thinking you’ll never find it, the path opens up to a stunning hidden beach with crystal-clear waters.

Viles

The shore is made up of sand, with a small area covered in large pebbles, but the setting is peaceful and perfect for a swim.

It’s also a great spot for reading, meditating, or simply unplugging. Just remember to bring your own snacks and beach gear—there are no facilities here.

Chalkida Google Beach Map & Getting Around

  • By Train: Take the Proastiakos (Suburban Railway) from Athens Larissis Station. It’s a scenic 1.5-hour ride and drops you right at the old bridge.
  • By Bus: Local buses (KTEL) to Alykes and Lefkanti depart from the main terminal near the train station. Ask for the “Paralia” (beach) stop.
  • By Car: Parking in central Chalkida is difficult. If you are heading to Asteria, park in the Kanithos neighborhood near the castle to save time.

Pro Tip: While the train is great for the city center, I highly recommend renting a car from Athens Airport to reach the best beaches like Alykes and Viles, which are difficult to access by public transport.
