What is SeaJets Greece?
SeaJets is a Greek/Cypriot ferry company founded in 1989 by Panagiotis and Marios Iliopoulos (father and son). While the company was established in 1989, it began passenger operations in 2002 and has since become known for operating high-speed vessels that connect 50 islands across the Aegean Sea.
SeaJets is perfect if you are looking to visit multiple islands during your stay in Greece. Their modern fleet consists of high-speed ferries and catamarans, offering a quicker alternative to traditional (and much cheaper) slower ferries.
**In December 2018, it was voted the best company of the year for passenger shipping at the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards 2018.
Popular Routes Operated by SeaJets
SeaJets covers a wide range of routes, especially in the Cyclades, one of the most popular island groups for tourists. Some of the most sought-after routes include:
- Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini: One of the busiest and most scenic routes, offering breathtaking views as you approach Santorini’s caldera.
- Mykonos to Santorini: A direct and fast connection between two of the most famous islands.
- Naxos, Paros, and Ios: SeaJets operates frequent services connecting these beautiful islands, making it easy to explore the Cyclades.
- Crete to Santorini: Another popular route for travelers wanting to explore both Crete and Santorini on the same trip.
How Long Does it Take to Get to the Islands with Seajets?
To get some idea of how fast the vessels are these are some of the time travel to the Greek islands:
- Syros in just 1 hour and 55 minutes
- Mykonos in 2 hours and 35 minutes
- Naxos in 3 hours and 20 minutes
- Ios in 4 hours
- Santorini in 4 hours and 40 minutes
The fast vessels offer the possibility to have perfect island day trips from Athens with ease!
Pricing for Santorini from Athens Port
The average ticket price for a SeaJets ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini typically ranges from €60 to €100 ($66,5 to $110,80) for an economy class seat, depending on the time of year, the specific vessel, and how early you book.
Prices tend to be higher during the peak summer season (June to August) and can vary based on availability. For premium seating or VIP options, the cost can be higher, often ranging between €100 to €150 ($110,80 to $166,24).
How to Book SeaJets Tickets
Booking your SeaJets tickets is easy and can be done online through their website or Ferryscanner which I use for the islands. You can also purchase tickets directly at the port, but during peak travel season (especially summer), it’s highly recommended to book in advance to secure your spot.
What to Expect Onboard SeaJets Ferries
Here’s what you can expect when traveling with SeaJets:
- Speed: SeaJets are high-speed vessels, which means you’ll spend less time traveling and more time enjoying your destination.
- Comfort: The ferries offer a range of seating options, from economy class to more luxurious VIP lounges.
- Facilities: Onboard, you can find snack bars, restrooms, and plenty of seating to relax during your journey.
- Luggage: You’re allowed to bring luggage, and there’s a designated area to store larger items during the trip. If you have high-value items – laptops, cameras, and such- I suggest you better take them with you.
Tips for a Smooth Journey with SeaJets
- Arrive Early: It’s always a good idea to arrive at the embarkation area in Piraeus at least an hour before your departure time, especially during the busy summer months.
- Upgrade to VIP or Business Class: If you’re concerned about crowds or want a more comfortable experience, consider upgrading to VIP or Business Class. The extra space and quieter atmosphere can make a significant difference, especially on longer routes.
- Check the Weather: Since SeaJets operates on the windy Aegean Sea, weather conditions can sometimes cause delays or cancellations. Always check for updates before heading to the port.
- Consider Motion Sickness: If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking motion sickness medication, especially on windy days (when meltemia winds are in full swing in July and August, or winter) when the sea can be choppy. Also, book the upper-level seating to minimize motion sickness.
- Flight in Athens Airport: I suggest allowing at least four (4) hours from the estimated time of arrival at the port to the time of departure of your flight. If you would like to stay near the Athens airport this is an excellent list of hotels you can choose from.
- You can not sit at the seats with the table as it is a premium charge.
- If you take an economy seat, you may find the legroom in the main part of the cabin tight.
- Wifi costs €3 ($3,32) per trip.
- They do not accept EVs or PHEVs

Many travelers have had positive experiences with SeaJets, highlighting these key points:
- Fast travel times, convenient island hopping, and a simple and user-friendly online booking process, allowing for advance ticket purchases, particularly during the busy season.
Common Complaints
While SeaJets has many advantages, some travelers have noted these common issues:
- Delays and Cancellations: Weather, especially in peak season, can cause delays and schedule changes.
- Crowding: Economy class can be crowded during busy travel times, leading to a less comfortable journey.
- Seasickness: The fast ferries can cause a bumpy ride on windy days, with several passengers reporting seasickness.
- Price Point: Some find SeaJets fares higher than slower ferry options, though the speed makes up for the price difference.
Overall Ratings
- Google Reviews: Generally rated between 3.0 and 4.0 stars, with positive feedback on speed and convenience, but negative comments on delays and crowding.
- TripAdvisor: Mostly not great ratings, with smooth trips praised, but some complaints about customer service during delays or cancellations.

SeaJets Greece vs Blue Star Ferries: Which is Best for Island Hopping?
SeaJets and Blue Star Ferries are two of the most well-known ferry companies in Greece, but they offer distinct services tailored to different needs. Here’s a comparison to help you decide which one works best for your trip. I use them both depending on where I am going and my budget.
SeaJets:
- Speed: High-speed ferries, faster travel times.
- Cost: More expensive due to faster service.
- Comfort: Smaller vessels, fewer amenities, but VIP seating available on some ferries.
- Weather Sensitivity: More affected by rough seas, potential delays in bad weather.
- Experience: Best for travelers prioritizing speed and efficiency.
Blue Star Ferries:
- Speed: Slower but more stable and comfortable ferries.
- Cost: More budget-friendly, especially in economy class.
- Comfort: Larger vessels with more space, restaurants, lounges, and even cabins.
- Weather Sensitivity: Less affected by bad weather, more reliable in rough seas.
- Experience: Ideal for a relaxed journey with scenic views and more amenities.
Both companies are reliable, so your choice depends on whether you prefer speed (SeaJets) or comfort and cost (Blue Star).
Where to Stay in Athens Port of Piraeus
If you have an early departure and want to stay in Piraeus to avoid missing your ferry, I can recommend a few great places to stay:
- Triton Hotel Piraeus is a 5-minute walk from the port, a perfectly fine hotel!
- Phidias Piraeus Hotel is a fantastic mid-range choice, near the port at a quiet area with private shuttle that provides guests with free transfer to and from the port of Piraeus.
- If you would like to spend the night in one of the most picturesque areas in Piraeus, Kastella, then you should choose the Alex Monte Kastella (4-star). Nearby is the Mikrolimano bay with some of the best fish and seafood taverns in Athens.
- A fantastic budget apartment, close to the sea, cozy and sunny is the Mikrolimano Gem: Serene 1BR Apartment.
Conclusion
SeaJets is not perfect but it is a top choice for traveling to the Greek islands. If you’re short on time or simply want to maximize your island-hopping experience, SeaJets will help you get from one island to the next quickly and comfortably – or at least this is what happens most of the time. 😀
